Walser wants his happy Giants to make early statement in title race

By Stuart McKinley

Derrick Walser is hoping to feed off the feel-good factor in the Belfast Giants squad as their battle for the Elite League title begins in earnest.

Four wins in six Challenge Cup games as well as a victory in their only league match to date have prepared the Giants ahead of a six-month battle for the big prize, which really kicks in when they face the Cardiff Devils at the SSE Arena tonight.

"We are a happy group, we are working well together," said player-coach Walser. "You are still learning, this is early in the year. You don't have that team chemistry until you are a month or two into the season when you go through a losing streak or a couple of bumps in the road - that's when you figure out what type of team you really have."

Cardiff have won four out of seven this season in all competitions. Walser is aware of the strengths the Welsh side possess, but is focusing on his own team.

"We've just got to play our game," he said. "I know what type of team they bring, I know what type of game they are going to play, but we've got to match it, we've got to play as fast as them."

Walser expects to have a full roster available and that means he will have to decide which of his imports to sit out.
