Ireland qualify for hockey World Cup

Ireland have qualified for the hockey World Cup for the first time since 1990 following a 1-0 win over New Zealand.

The Green Machine booked their place at the finals in India next year when Alan Sothern claimed the only goal of their World League 3 play-off with 11 minutes remaining.

The victory was enough for fifth place at the event in Johannesburg and a long-awaited spot at the premier competition.

Head coach Craig Fulton said "It was a tight game and it could have gone either way. It was a win built on character and defence basically won us that game. We wanted to come away with qualification and that's really pleasing from tonight, it was a great squad effort".
