Circuit of Ireland: Gass to keep his foot on pedal
It was the biggest win of his career to date but Darren Gass views it as a stepping stone to his next target — the Circuit of Ireland.
The 23-year-old Armagh driver put in an impressive display to win the Circuit of Kerry at the weekend, coming from behind to snatch victory from Kevin Barrett.
Gass had led midway through the event but dropped back to third, 13 seconds behind Barrett, when his McKinstry Motorsport Subaru S11 suffered fuel pressure problems.
However, with the car back on song, he charged through the final two stages to edge out Barrett by four seconds, adding Kerry to his wins on the Mourne and Lurgan Park rallies last season.
Now the former Pirelli Star Driver winner and Mitsubishi UK team member is turning his attention to the Donnelly Group Circuit of Ireland. But without a change of plans by Belgian driver David Bonjean, Gass might not be in the Easter entry list. Nor would his team boss Kenny McKinstry.
McKinstry’s Banbridge team were scheduled to take the S11 Subaru to the Rally Wallonie in Belgium on the same Easter weekend but Bonjean has switched to a Peugeot 307.
