Corse Ferrari's Lyons is excited by British comeback
Richard Lyons will be back on British race tracks this season driving for the AF Corse Ferrari team.
The Hillsborough-born driver has spent the past 12 years competing in Japan, the Far East and Australia, winning the Formula Nippon and Super GT championships. But now he is to make a return to UK racing, combining his Japanese programme for the Hitotsuyama Audi team with the British GT championship.
He will race a Ferrari 458 GT3 prepared by the World Endurance Championship-winning AF Corse team in company with Pasin Lathouras, a 20-year-old Thai driver who won the Asian Ferrari Challenge.
"Going to be a lot of travelling involved this year," Lyons tweeted from Japan, where he was testing with the Hitotsuyama team.
He has not raced in the UK on a regular basis since finishing second in the 1999 Formula Palmer Audi championship but says he is "really excited" to be back.
"I have raced on most of the circuits in the past, with great results, and although they will all be new to my team-mate he has been very successful and super-fast in the Asian series," said Lyons.
Lyons, who also drove for Team Ireland in the A1 GP championship, is to partner Japanese driver Tomonobu Fujii in the Super GT series which he won back in 2004. They will share an Audi R8 LMS Ultra in the championship which begins at Fuji on April 5.
The British GT series start two weeks later at Oulton Park.
