Darren Gass now targeting some Donegal cheer

By Sammy Hamill

Driving seat: Darren Gass is on the comeback trailLittle has been seen of Darren Gass in recent months but the 2012 Irish Tarmac rally champion is shaping up for a comeback on the Donegal International.

Having sold his Ulster Rally winning Subaru S10, Gass is planning to return to action next month in an S14 Impreza hired from the Welsh stable of Melvyn Evans.

Already the Donegal line-up has passed the 100 mark and also includes five-times Tarmac champion Eugene Donnelly in a McGeehan Motorsport Mini WRC as well as Derek McGarrity who is provisionally listed to drive an S14 Subaru.

Current leader of the Tarmac series Declan Boyle (Subaru), Donagh Kelly (Ford Focus) and reigning champion Garry Jennings are also on the list as is Pirelli Star driver Daniel McKenna, winner of the ill-fated Jim Clark Rally at the weekend, who will revert back to his Ford Escort for the June 20/22 event.

Just a week later attention will switch to the Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally which looks set to feature leading names including last year's winner Jennings, national champion Boyle, McGarrity and Donnelly as well as Kevin Kelleher, runner-up on the Circuit of Munster at the weekend, and 11-times Park winner Kenny McKinstry.

The North Armagh Club-run rally has switched from its regular August date to June 28 but the format remains the same with eight sprint stages through the park starting at 10am.
