Derek McGeehan out to taste Turkey Run joy
Officially, it is the final event of the motorsport year but to many competitors the Maiden City club's Turkey Run is a warm up for the new season ahead.
Which is why the entry list for Saturday's rally at the old Shackleton army complex at Ballykelly contains the names of drivers like Donagh Kelly, second to Garry Jennings in the Irish Tarmac championship, and Derek McGeehan, runner-up in the Northern Ireland series.
McGeehan, last year's winner, heads the list in his updated WRC Mini with Kelly at No.3, the Donegal driver giving his Ford Focus a work-out ahead of the start of the 2014 Tarmac series in Galway. Martin Cairns will also use the event to try out his recently-acquired S14 Subaru.
Desi Henry, a regular in the British championship in his DS3 Citroen, plans to switch to Irish events next season in an S9 Subaru and will give the car its first outing at Shackleton.
The 90-strong line-up also includes Martin Donnelly and Alan McGeehan in WRC Toyotas, Richard Hogg, George Robinson, Pat Kirk and Martin Doherty in Mitsubishis as well as Emma McKinstry driving a Proton for the first time.
The Riverridge Recycling event starts at 10am and will be decided over six stages.
Meanwhile, more than 150 crews have entered the UAC's traditional December 26 fun event, (It's Not The) Flatright Boxing Day Rally, with over 20 MX5 Mazdas heading the list which has Robert Woodside at No.1.
It has a host of well-known names including Allan Harryman, Stephen Whitford, Robert McGimpsey Robert Dickson and current autotest king Steven Ferguson. It is based at Moira.
