IRC title takes Meeke’s focus amid BMW link

Having given his Intercontinental Rally Challenge title defence the kiss of life with second place in the Azores, Kris Meeke tackles another Atlantic island event this week.

Round eight of the IRC series takes place on Madeira and the Peugeot UK driver from Dungannon will start the event amid speculation linking him to the new BMW Mini project and a move to the World championship next season.

Meeke refuses to fuel the rumour-mill and has eyes only for Madeira and the IRC crown.

“At the moment I’ve a big enough job on my hands trying to retain the title,” he said.

“All my efforts, all my focus is on that at the moment. Obviously next year lots of things are happening in the WRC, but I’m very happy where I am with Peugeot.”

In Madeira, he takes on the championship leading Skoda pairing of Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky, the Czech team being boosted by the appearance of Meeke’s former Peugeot team-mate Freddy Loix.

The biggest threat may come from within his own Peugeot camp. Madeira is like a second home to Portuguese champion Bruno Maghalaes, who was second last year.
