Northern Ireland Rally Championship: Biggerstaff-Donnelly in duel
They are two of the youngest drivers in the series, and comparative rookies, but the Northern Ireland rally championship has come down to a straight fight between Stuart Biggerstaff and Mark Donnelly.
And so closely matched are they that they tied on equal times for fourth place on Saturday’s eighth round, the Bushwhacker Rally, in the Tyrone forests.
With two rounds of the Hankook series remaining 22-year-old Biggerstaff leads by 12 points from 18-year-old Donnelly. But in reality it is much closer with just the best seven scores from the 10-event championship to count in the final analysis.
From his current total of 71 points Biggerstaff has to drop his worst score to date – five points from the Circuit of Ireland National – leaving him on 66 and just seven ahead of Tyrone student Donnelly whose 59 points in his production Mitsubishi have been accumulated from only six events. There are 24 points at stake over the final two rounds starting with the Castlewellan-based Down Rally on October 23.
