Northern Ireland Rally: McKinstry makes it a hat-trick
A first Circuit of Ireland victory may have eluded Kenny McKinstry but he still made it a hat-trick of wins in the Northern Ireland rally championship.
The Saturday leg of the Circuit incorporated round three of the NI Hankook series and at the end of the 10-stage section McKinstry was fractionally ahead of Derek McGarrity.
Of course, McGarrity turned it around on Sunday, winning the overall rally for a fifth time, but McKinstry had already collected his third maximum score of the NI championship.
McGarrity picked up second place points ahead of Neil McCance, Donagh Kelly and George Robinson.
Now McKinstry, a three-time champion back in the eighties, leads by 14 points from McGarrity and Robinson in joint second place.
In the premier Tarmac championship, Kevin Barrett takes over at the top of the table ahead of Tim McNulty who sat out the Circuit to concentrate on this weekend’s Rally of the Lakes in Killarney.
Barrett, who finished third, moves to 22 points and leads by one from top production runner Sam Moffett.
Meanwhile, the Circuit class winners included two women drivers, with Glenda Boyle taking her Honda Civic to victory in class one, and Omagh schoolgirl Amy Cox (17) winning class six in her Pinto-engined Ford Escort.
