Porsche winner Eastwood lands MI Driver of the Month accolade

By Sammy Hamill

Charlie Eastwood, a strong contender for this year's Porsche Carrera Cup GB, has been chosen as Motorsport Ireland's Young Racing Driver of the Month for April.

It comes on the back of an outstanding start to the 2016 series in which the 21 year-old Belfast driver won both of the Carrera Cup races at Donington Park, having earlier taken a pair of second places at the opening weekend at Brands Hatch.

By the end of April he was leading the championship after the first four rounds although he has since slipped back to second place behind reigning champion Dan Cammish.

Eastwood started his racing career in karts at the age of eight, achieving great success, and has held a Motorsport Ireland licence since 2012, when he won the Rotax World Final, adding the 2013 Rotax European championship to his achievements.

He switched to car racing in 2014, driving in the UK Formula 4 series, the New Zealand Toyota championship and the Formula Renault Eurocup.

But it was the move to Porsche which has seen his career take off. Selected for the Porsche GB scholarship at the end of 2015, it provided him with a supported programme over the next two seasons.

He won the rookie category in 2016 as well as taking third in the pro class, and is now one of the strongest contenders for outright victory this year.

Eastwood is now a contender for Motorsport Ireland's Young Racing Driver of the Year Award which carries a 50,000 euro prize package to help further the winner's career.
