Sheils joy after his triumphant Killalane return
After a short sabbatical, Derek Sheils made a winning return to Irish road racing with the Burrows Engineering Racing Team at the East Coast Racing Festival at Killalane over the weekend.
Showing no signs of rust, Sheils - on the Cookstown BE Suzuki - edged a tight six-lap Open race by 0.138 seconds from Michael Sweeney.
However, in the Grand Final, Sheils had no equals, streaking to victory after seven laps of the 3.6-mile circuit with 18 seconds in hand over Sweeney.
Sheils, on his own Yamaha, had to settle for second, 0.185 seconds behind Derek McGee - making a quick return to action following his Ulster GP crash - in the Supersport race.
Sheils said: "I enjoyed the meeting, and to win a couple of races was the icing on the cake. We made changes from the first Open race to the Grand Final, which improved the handling of the bike, so it all went well."
Sheils' 22-year-old team-mate Davey Todd spent the weekend feeling unwell, and was later diagnosed with a bladder infection.
He still managed fourth in the Open race, second in the Supertwin, was forced out of the Supersport with a machine problem and decided to sit out the Grand Final.
Todd said: "I felt really tired. I tried to do the best I could, but when I went out on the bike I felt really bad and it got worse. I had no energy after the Supertwin race, so we sat out the last Superbike race. It was a disappointing way to end the season."
Team boss Burrows said: "Fair play to Derek, he took some time away from National racing but picked up where he left off. It's a great feeling to sign off the season having won the last race.
"Davey had a fourth and a second, not bad considering. The team have had a strong year with Davey the fastest ever newcomer at the North West and second fastest newcomer at the TT."
The team have a provisional entry in for the Macau Grand Prix in November for Todd, while Sheils will compete at the event for the Penz13.com team.
On Macau, Magherafelt rider Paul Jordan is set to make his Far East debut with the Dafabet Devitt Racing team.
