Speedy Kris Meeke Rally Mexico bid for podium finish

Kris Meeke underlined his determination to challenge for a podium place in Rally Mexico with third fastest time in yesterday's shakedown session.

The Ulsterman, in his Team Abu Dhabi Citroen DS3, was two seconds slower than the VW Polo of World champion Sebastien Ogier and three-10ths down on Hyundai's Thierry Neuville.

But Meeke - and Neuville - opted for only three runs through the test stage near Leon, satisfied they had the right set-up for the tough, high-altitude event. Ogier made five runs.

Jari Matti Latvala in the second VW was fourth fastest with Meeke's team-mate Mads Ostberg fifth and Andreas Mikkelsen (VW) completed the top six. Dani Sordo crashed his Hyundai.

Meanwhile Sweden's Emil Bergkvist, leader of the Junior series in the European championship, is stepping up his Circuit of Ireland preparations.

Bergkvist and German Opel team-mate Marijan Griebel will be heading to Ireland early to fit in the Midlands Moto Rally - on March 29 - round two of the Irish national championship less than a week ahead of the Circuit start.
