Super move gives Turkington a shot at the big guns

By Sammy Hamill

Colin Turkington will join the line-up when the International Superstars of Motorsport series makes a pit stop at the Donington circuit next month.

The 2009 British Touring Car champion, from Portadown, has been invited to drive a BMW M3 for the Italian Scuderia Giudici team in a championship featuring ex-Formula One drivers Gianni Morbidelli and Toni Liuzzi.

He will also be up against his former BTCC rival Fabrizio Giovanardi.

"I've always been fascinated by the Superstars series and I'm looking forward to being part of it, especially in a car as powerful as the BMW M3," said Turkington.

"The general level seems pretty high with drivers like Liuzzi and Morbidelli, and I'm looking forward to racing against Fabrizio Giovanardi again."

Back in the BTCC after a three-year absence, Turkington moved up to fourth in the points standings despite a bruising series of races at Snetterton at the weekend.

Having finished fourth in the first of the three races at the Norfolk track, Turkington led in race two until an overtaking attempt by Andrew Jordan's Honda sent the WSR BMW into a spin and Turkington dropped back to finish sixth.

It was a similar story in race three with the Ulsterman surging through into the lead from third place on the grid and leading until he was knocked into another spin in an over-ambitious overtaking manoeuvre by current BTCC champion Gordon Sheddon.

Again he recovered to finish sixth as Sheddon took the victory for Honda, joining Sam Tordoff (MG) and Jordan as the race winners on the day.

Turkington is now fourth and the leading non-Honda driver in the championship which is headed by Matt Neale.
