Turkington to stick with BMW in bid for title No.3
Colin Turkington will remain with the West Surrey Racing-run Team BMW as he challenges for a third British Touring Car Championship in 2018.
The Portadown driver finished runner-up to Ash Sutton last season on his return to the West Surrey team where he won the BTCC title in 2009 and 2014.
Despite losing out in the final race of the year to Sutton and the Team BMR Subaru he drove in 2016, Turkington insists he has no regrets about the move and says there were never any doubts in his mind about continuing with WSR in 2018.
“Returning to WSR last year was a dream come true and I was extremely proud to help them retain the teams’ and manufacturers’ titles for BMW,” said Turkington, who will again have Rob Collard and Andrew Jordan as his team-mates.
“It is clear to me that Team BMW is my motorsport home and a place where I perform at my best.
Turkington, whose announcement came hard on the heels of the news that fellow Ulsterman Chris Smylie has retained his BTCC place with the Norlin team, added: “We head into 2018 with the experience of 2017 under our belt, and I believe this will add to the potential of what we can achieve together.
“We had a lot to learn last year with the new Dunlop tyres, and on many occasions I knew there was still more to come. We can now build on this and aim to hit the ground running with an accurate and detailed pre-season test plan.”
Turkington — who took four victories last season, including a dramatic dash through the field to snatch victory in the penultimate race of the year at Brands Hatch — will be among a number of Ulster drivers appearing at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham this weekend.
Kris Meeke will also be there on the Citroën stand with one of the team’s C3 WRC cars, before continuing preparations for the Monte Carlo Rally and the start of the World Championship.
