Broken hand rules Andrew Irwin out of World Supersport debut
Andrew Irwin is out of the first round of the World Supersport Championship after a crash in practice.
The Carrickfergus rider suffered a broken hand and has been ruled out of what would have been his debut in the series at Philip Island near Melbourne. After surgery in St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, he is hoping to return for the second round of the series on 24-25 March in Thailand.
Australian Aiden Wagner will stand in for Irwin this week.
"Sorry to the whole @ptrhonda team and all my sponsors, will be back 100 percent for Thailand," he tweeted.
It was a fracture of his third metacarpal bone that delayed Irwin's Championship debut for the PTR CIA Landlord Insurance Honda team. He was signed by the team after finishing second in the 2017 British Supersport series, claiming a maiden victory at Brands Hatch in October.
