Laverty takes positives after 18th place in wet weather

By Staff Reporter

Eugene Laverty will be disappointed with his opening day in Malaysia, the Ulsterman only managing 18th position in the inclement weather conditions during free practice at the Sepang Circuit, which is hosting the penultimate round of the 2016 MotoGP World Championship.

Rain hit the second free practice session, with Laverty cautious in his approach on the Pull & Bear Aspar Ducati.

Having finished the day 18th, which on a positive note was just one second outside the top 10, the Monaco-based Toomebridge rider summed it up when he said: "The weather wasn't quite 'Phillip Island crazy' but it has been up and down here in Malaysia."

That was a reference to the atrotious weather conditions in Australia at the previous round.

"In Friday morning's session there were some wet parts on the track, so I was being very careful, but so far the new surface feels good," he said.

"It is smooth and I am looking forward to getting some really dry laps"

Tomorrow's race takes place at 7am UK time.
