Nicky Hayden dead: US Superbike ace hit by car in Italy while training
US Superbike ace Nicky Hayden has died from his injuries after he was hit by a car while training in Italy last week.
The 35-year-old, who won the MotoGP title in 2006, was cycling on the Rimini coastline in the Emilia-Romagna region when the accident happened last Wednesday.
The Red Bull Honda rider received some medical attention before being transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Hayden, from Owensboro, Kentucky, suffered head and chest injuries in the collision and was transferred to the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where he was treated in the intensive care unit.
Maurizio Bufalini Hospital announced the racer had died on Monday evening.
Hayden was 13th in the Superbike World Championship standings after his 12th-placed finish at last Sunday's Motul Italian Round at Imola.
