History-maker Jonathan Rea typically put family first after clinching his incredible, record-breaking fifth successive World Superbike Championship at Magny-Cours in France yesterday.

Templepatrick-based Rea (32) has been racing towards the title for weeks on his world-beating Kawasaki machine.

But his coronation was unexpectedly confirmed in a decisive sequence of events as Rea won yesterday's final race at Magny-Cours as his nearest title challenger, Spaniard Alvaro Bautista, crashed out, leaving the Ulsterman with an unassailable 129-point lead in the series with rounds remaining in Argentina and Qatar.

As the team celebrations began, Rea rushed away to honour a commitment to join his brother Richard's stag weekend party in Ibiza.

An emotional Rea said before departing: "Of the five titles, this has been the toughest. People had written me off earlier in the season when I was racking up second places behind Alvaro, but all those seconds won me this Championship."
