His coffin was carried out of the church by family members, including brother and fellow racer Michael.

Famous faces from across racing were at the church to pay their respects, including North West 200 winner Glenn Irwin, Derek Sheils, Ryan Farquhar, Melissa Kennedy, William Cowden and Nigel Moore.

Racing legends Brian Reid and Steven Cull paid their respects, as did Hawk team bosses Steve and Stuart Hicken, while race marshalls provided a guard of honour as the hearse arrived.

Family friend and motorcycle pundit Liam Beckett attended along with fellow broadcasters Jackie Fullerton and Adrian Logan.

Beckett, a former mechanic for William's father Robert, said that it would be a week full of tears following the tragedy on Saturday afternoon.

“I pray for the family and my thoughts are with his partner Janine, daughter Ella and their unborn child," he said on Sunday.

"Everyone is heartbroken and I must admit I cried my eyes out before arriving at the family home and I’m sure I’ll shed plenty more tears throughout this week. It’s devastating."

The racer was laid to rest in the same graveyard as his father Robert, who was killed at the North West 200 in 2008, and uncle Joey, who died following a crash in Estonia eight years earlier.

William died after a crash at the Skerries 100 in County Dublin on Saturday afternoon.

William was a racing hero in his own right, a winner at both the North West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix. He took top spot on the podium four times at the NW200, the most recent in 2014, and seven times at the UGP.

He also secured nine podium finishes at the Isle of Man TT since his debut in 2006.

He claimed a total of 108 race victories in Irish National Road Racing.
