William Dunlop: Famous faces pay their tributes to a 'true gentleman'

By Lisa Smyth

Sporting legends, television personalities and politicians are among the famous names who have paid tribute to William Dunlop after his tragic death on Saturday.

Carl Frampton and Barry McGuigan have both expressed their shock at the horror smash at the Skerries 100 and sent their sympathies to the family of 32-year-old Dunlop, as they face up to the unimaginable heartache of losing a third member to road racing.

The son of the late Robert and nephew of the legendary Joey, William was making his return to the sport after pulling out of this year's Isle of Man TT to be with his pregnant partner, Janine Brolly.

It is understood that William was taking part in an Open race practice session when he crashed at the Sam's Tunnel section of the 2.9-mile circuit on the third lap at about 5pm.

As the news of William's death broke on Saturday evening, former First Minister and DUP leader Arlene Foster posted on Twitter, saying she was shocked and saddened and added: "Motorcycling was his life and he will be forever remembered for his many achievements, both in Ballymoney and across the world."

Secretary of State Karen Bradley said: "Like so many of his family, road racing was his passion and he achieved many accolades at home and internationally.

"My thoughts and condolences are with his whole family."

Labour MP Kate Hoey also posted on Twitter to express her sadness, describing his death as "a huge loss to road racing and most of all to his family".

Emmerdale actor Dominic Brunt said he and his children idolise the Dunlop family.

He continued: "We are so saddened and shocked to hear of William Dunlop's passing at Skerries 100. William was a gent and super nice to my boys when we met him and Michael at UGP 2017."

Meanwhile, TV presenter Eamonn Holmes said: "This is truly shocking news once more for the Dunlop family circle, Northern Ireland and the road racing fraternity.

"Sincere condolences to William's partner and daughter. So so sad."

Fashion model and race car diver Jodie Kidd posted on Twitter: "RIP William Dunlop. Fly strong rider, my heart aches for his family and friends. In my prayers."

Northern Ireland sports stars have also spoken of their devastation.

Golfer Graeme McDowell described the Dunlop family as personal heroes, as he grew up on the north coast where the NW200 is staged each year.

"It's such a dangerous sport, I watched the documentary Road which was amazing, they sit there in front of the cameras and they know the dangers that face them... yet it's in their blood, they love what they do.

"They are unbelievably brave, brave people."

Rory McIlroy added: "What that family has been through over the last few years is horrendous. You wouldn't wish that on anyone. Everyone's thoughts are with them now. It's a very sad loss."
