William Dunlop: Fans welcome at family home to pay respects

The Dunlop family home has been opened to William's friends and fans following the rider's tragic death last weekend.

Close family friend Liam Beckett extended the invitation early on Tuesday morning on behalf of William's mother Louise.

The 32-year-old is understood to have been killed instantly while riding his Temple Golf Club Yamaha during practice for the Skerries 100 in Co Dublin on Saturday afternoon.

He is survived by his partner Janine, who is due to give birth in September. His daughter Ella's second birthday is on Sunday.

William's funeral will take place at Garryduff Presbyterian Church at 1pm on Wednesday.

He will be laid to rest in the same graveyard as his father Robert, who was killed following an accident in practice at the NW200 in 2008, and uncle Joey, who died after a crash in Estonia in 2000.

Speaking to the Sunday Life, Liam Beckett paid a heartbreaking tribute to his friend.

"I pray for the family and my thoughts are with his partner Janine, daughter Ella and their unborn child," he said.

"Everyone is heartbroken and I must admit I cried my eyes out before arriving at the family home last night and I’m sure I’ll shed plenty more tears throughout this week. It’s devastating.

"I don’t say this lightly. William got to the top of his profession in road racing not because he was a nephew of Joey or the son of Robert, but because of his own talent and ability.

"But my relationship with William goes beyond the sport of bikes. I enjoyed playing golf with William regularly and he was such an unassuming lad. I made sure that when I picked the players to play with us in our fourball, William would always be comfortable.

“I will miss the social aspect we enjoyed and I am heartbroken.”
