Co Down gymnast Rhys McClenaghan qualifies for 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Co Down gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
McClenaghan earned his spot after progressing to the pommel horse final at the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
The 20-year-old's qualifying score of 15.200 was only bettered by GB's Max Whitlock, who topped with board with a mark of 15.266.
McClenaghan becomes the first Irish gymnast to reach a world final.
There were three Olympic places up for grabs for gymnasts who reached the final, however they had to be from a country not already qualified for the team competition.
In the end, only two of the spots were filled by Ireland's McClenaghan and Cyril Tommasone of France.
McClenaghan won the Commonwealth and European titles in 2018, however he was ruled out of last year's World Championships due to a shoulder injury, which sidelined him for six months.
