Cuddihy falls short

Ireland's Joanne Cuddihy failed to qualify for the final of the 400 metres at the London Olympics.

The 28-year-old finished fifth in her heat in 51.88 seconds, but she was not too downhearted.

"I think I am happy with how I ran, so I now need to move on," she said.

Robert Heffernan finished ninth in the men's 20-kilometre walk in a season's best of one hour, 20 minutes and 18 seconds.

On Saturday morning, Stephanie Reilly and Tori Pena failed to make it through to the final of the 3,000m steeplechase and pole vault respectively.

Reilly finished ninth in her heat, clocking nine mins 44.77secs.

California-born Pena failed to record a height in the pole vault and crashed out of the competition in disappointing fashion.
