Ards pair clinch spot on plane to Commonwealth Games

By David Kelly

Northern Ireland's Commonwealth Games swimming team tripled in the space of an hour at the Irish long course championships in Dublin's National Aquatic Centre last night.

Sycerika McMahon had already booked her spot in Glasgow and she will now be joined on the plane by Ards pair Michael Dawson and Curtis Coulter.

Dawson touched in 29.01 in the semi-finals of the 50m breaststroke to record his nomination time before going on to take bronze in the final, tied with Dan Sweeney in 29.54. Gold went to Olympian Barry Murphy in 28.14.

Then Coulter stepped onto the blocks for the first leg of the men's 4x100m freestyle relay for Ards and his time of 50.32 was also a nomination mark and helped his club to gold in 3:31.25 ahead of Bangor in 3:35.35. The other three members of the Ards quartet were Matthew Scott, Conor Munn and James Brown.

Bangor's Jordan Sloan took gold in the 200m freestyle.
