Athletics: Murray back to best

St Malachy’s Gary Murray shrugged off a prolonged spell of injury to comprehensively win the weekend’s NI Senior 12k Cross Country title at Stormont Estate.

The winner of the premier local cross country event was always going to be difficult to predict following the late withdrawals of three times winner Brian Campbell and top road racer Joe McAlister. However, both athletes may well have struggled against the dominant 29-year-old Murray who set a pace from the gun which the opposition simply could not match. A sizeable gap developed early on from Omagh’s Steven Duncan and Striders’ Eddie McGinley who fought a close dual for second place ahead of an isolated Greg Roberts from City of Derry. At the finish the all-conquering Murray had a 31-second victory margin over Duncan who managed to out-sprint McGinley.

The women’s 6k title was more predictable as last year’s runner-up, Abbey’s Gladys Ganiel-O’Neill, took full advantage of the absence of defending champion Aileen Morrison to win by eight seconds from Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin.
