Bowls: Kelly and Hughes grasp Pairs title

Ballymoney’s Garry Kelly produced an array of stunning conversion shots to give Ireland their only piece of silverware when they lifted the British Isles pairs title for only the sixth time since the event was first played in 1959.

Kelly, who will spearhead Ireland’s Commonwealth Games campaign in Delhi in the singles berth, and clubmate Brian Hughes sealed a 16-15 final victory over Guernsey pair Kris Bichard and Dan de la mare.

However, Irish interest in the Junior Singles ended at the semi-final stage for Ballymena’s Steven Shields.

Meanwhile, Ireland begin the defence of their Home International Series today, where they will be gunning for the title for the fourth time in six years.
