Northern Ireland’s boxers proved a knockout yesterday by claiming four more podium places, helping the team create history by equalling the country’s best ever medal haul in the Commonwealth Games.
In Edinburgh in 1986, Team NI took home 15 medals and that is the tally the Class of 2022 have achieved so far with Dylan Eagleson, siblings Michaela Walsh and Aidan Walsh and Amy Broadhurst winning their Quarter-Final fights in Birmingham to guarantee bronze at least.
The quartet made it a magnificent seven for the boxing squad in tomorrow’s Semi-Finals with Carly McNaul, Jude Gallagher and Eireann Nugent also fighting for a place in the Final and a shot at gold, which was achieved by the inspirational Bethany Firth on a wonderful Wednesday when fellow swimmer Daniel Wiffin and heptathlete Kate O’Connor claimed stunning silvers.
Broadhurst, who secured medal No.15 with her victory in the last-eight, said: “It’s amazing to be part of one of the most successful Games the team has ever attended.”
