Ciara Mageean is warming up for Euro test

By Brian Hill

World Junior 1500 metres silver medallist Ciara Mageean has been selected to represent Ireland in the European Cup in Izmir,Turkey in just over two weeks time.

The 19-year-old Portaferry woman will be preparing for this event by competing this weekend in her first outdoor race of the season.

This will be in an Irish Miler's Club invitational 800 metres event at Tullamore as part of the Woodie's Irish Schools' Championship meeting.

Ciara's opposition will include Kilkenny's Ciara Everard who ran a seasons's best time of two minutes 7.10 seconds at the BMC meeting in Manchester last week.

The 20-year-old is the current Irish Indoors champion from the Odyssey. She also took the bronze medal in the AAA's Indoors.

Also racing are Rioch's Laura Crowe and Kilmore's Fiona Kehoe who took silver and bronze at the Odyssey. Last year's winner Kelly McNeice of Lisburn has pulled out of the event after an indifferent 1,500 metres race in Manchester.

Mageean's training is going well following a niggly ankle injury and the Tullamore race represents a confidence building opportunity for her.

She had a disappointing experience at the Odyssey Arena three months ago when she was decisively beaten over 1,500 metres by Irish international Mary Cullen.

The men's 1500 metres line-up at Tullamore includes World Cup Paralympic champion Michael McKillop.

The 800 metres has strong northern representation including Noel Collins, Niall Robinson, Adam Ingram and Garth Hill.

Meanwhile, the cream of Ulster Schools' athletes will be aiming to go one better by capturing Irish Schools' titles.

They include Commonwealth Games athletes Katie Kirk (200 metres), Joanna Mills (400 metres and long jump) and Christine McMahon (400 metres hurdles).
