Disabled athletes get facilities scheme boost

Two of Northern Ireland’s top disabled sports people, Paralympic swimmer Johnny Cummings and International Blind Golfer Jan Dinsdale, have launched an innovative new accreditation scheme designed to ensure that new and existing sports facilities fully meet the needs of people with disabilities.

The Inclusive Sports Facility (ISF) Accreditation Scheme was jointly developed by Disability Sports NI and Sport Northern Ireland and is endorsed by Northern Ireland’s main disability rights organisation, Disability Action.

The launch, which was also supported by the Local Government Association (NILGA) took place in the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum Leisure Centre — the first centre to achieve ISF accreditation, where the Council Vice Chairman, Cyril Brownlee was presented with the ‘ISF’ Accreditation Mark.

At the launch Jan Dinsdale said: “I’m delighted that Fermanagh District Council have embraced the ISF scheme, and I look forward to more District Councils across Northern Ireland meeting the example they set.”
