Dolan steps up bid for World title success

By Graham Luney

Brendan Dolan will face Dutchman Benito van de Pas in the last-16 round at the PDC World Championship today.

Van de Pas progressed to this stage for the fourth time in five years thanks to a 4-2 victory over Toni Alcinas last night.

Fermanagh man Dolan, the World No.36, stunned Mervyn King 4-2 at Alexandra Palace to move past the third round for the first time.

Dolan is the last Irishman standing and is guaranteed £35,000 at this stage.

Three-time ranking event winner Van de Pas fired himself into a two-set lead, only for Peter Wright's second round conqueror Alcinas to claw his way back into the contest at 2-2.

With set five finely poised at 2-2, Van de Pas found a stunning 149 finish to win a crucial leg of the match and take a 3-2 lead.

Van de Pas, who also hit a 160 finish, made it a hat-trick of incredible ton-plus finishes with a 151 to take the sixth set to a decider which he won with a 15-dart leg to advance to round four.

Michael Smith came from behind to see off John Henderson 4-2 in the third round while Luke Humphries recorded a 4-1 win over Dimitri van den Bergh to reach the last 16.

Devon Petersen continued his incredible run at the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Steve West in round three.
