Fatigue took over but at least I'm not empty-handed, says Hastings
Although he finished on the podium at the Bangor Bowls Tournament, Robert Hastings admitted he simply ran out of steam at Ward Park.
He began his assault on an astonishing four disciplines at 8am on Saturday morning, and 12 hours later was still in action.
The Bangor man didn't end on a winning note. He and his wife Elaine - going for a record-breaking 10th success in the mixed pairs - were edged out by Larne's Valerie Steenson and Jon Erskine, from Castle.
After an exhausting day, Hastings had only the fours title to celebrate following a 16-7 success against his Bangor colleagues, skipped by Alan Stewart.
"I was out on my feet," said Hastings. "It was tough going, being involved in the semi-finals of four disciplines. In the end, fatigue got the better of me. Valerie and Jon played really well in that mixed fours final. At least I didn't end up empty-handed."
Gary Eaton got his hands on the prestigious singles title for the first time. The Salisbury man turned in an exceptional performance to record a resounding 10-4 win over Castle's Jim Corry.
"It's been a great week," said Eaton. "There have been plenty of big-name players to have won at Bangor and I'm thrilled to have had the pleasure."
Thomas Cannavan was again back in the winners' enclosure. He racked up a double success 12 months ago, and this time he excelled in the pairs discipline.
Cannavan teamed up with Jackie Erskine to roar to an impressive 8-5 win against his Bangor club colleagues Rodney McCutcheon and Keith Taylor.
