Fine fourth spot for McHenry at world age group championships

By Robert Jones

At the triathlon world age group championships on Australia's Gold Coast yesterday Saintfield's Desi McHenry put in a fine performance in the 70-74 section, finishing fourth.

McHenry has had a great career over the years with numerous podium finishes at international level and certainly always gives his best.

The event consisted of a one mile swim, 25-mile bike and six-mile run where he recorded a time of two hours 35 minutes.

His swim time of 27 minutes gave him a confident start coming out of the water in 10th place, followed by one hour 11 minutes for the rolling hills of the Gold Coast.

By this stage he made up five more places before the change over to running shoes.

The flat running course along the Pacific Coast demanded the best from McHenry but he was only able to pull back one more place.

He was, however, overjoyed by the performance which saw him finish so strongly against 40 of the world's best.
