I wanted both fights in Belfast: Warren

Promoter Frank Warren yesterday revealed how he tried to broker a deal to save Irish fight fans having to decide which title fight to watch next Friday night.

Warren stages Martin Rogan’s Commonwealth heavyweight title re-match with Sam Sexton at the Odyssey Arena, while Barry Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions have Paul McCloskey’s European title shot in Magherafelt.

It means the boxing fraternity have been split on who to go and support, though there would seem to be double the amount of fans expected in the Odyssey.

Warren said: “It’s a ridiculous situation but I can tell you that I made an offer for Barry Hearn to put the McCloskey fight on at the Odyssey with no strings attached.

“He could have walked away as champion and Irish fight fans could have watched both at the Odyssey but they wouldn’t agree, which is a pity.”

Warren says that the winner of the clash between Rogan and Sexton is almost certain to box Danny Williams for the British heavyweight title early next year.

Then Warren is keen to move the winner into either a World or European title shot.

“If Rogan comes through against Sexton then Williams will probably be next because the British Boxing Board of Control will order it,” said Warren.

“After that there will bigger things ahead and I know that if Rogan keeps winning then a world title shot can be his in 2010.

“But first he has to take care of business next Friday night and I think the re-match is going to be even more exciting than the first fight because there seems to be a little more needle this time.”
