Irish champs Ferguson and McSharry lead World assault
IIrish champions Conor Ferguson and Mona McSharry will lead two strong Ireland teams for both the European and the World junior swimming championships this summer.
Last weekend at the Irish Open championships at the National Aquatic Centre, McSharry, 16, won all three breaststroke events, the 50m, 100m and 200m, all in Irish junior records while 17-year-old Ferguson enjoyed a backstroke hat-trick.
Carrick lad Ferguson set an Irish senior record in the 200m and an Irish junior record in the 50m. Both athletes also went under the consideration time for the senior World Championships in July.
Bangor's rising star Jack McMillan has also been selected for the World junior championships along with Ellen Walshe of Templeogue, and Tallaght's Niamh Coyne will join McSharry and Ferguson for the World juniors being held in Indianapolis.
Ards starlet Rebecca Reid along with Shannon Russell of Lurgan and Lisburn's Rachel Bethel, who enjoyed a quartet of Irish titles last weekend, will all be going to the European junior championships along with Bangor lad McMillan.
All Ulster's top juniors will be pushing for Commonwealth Games times over the next few months.
