Jordan Sloan sprints into Glasgow team

By David Kelly

Bangor's Jordan Sloan secured his place on the Northern Ireland team for the Commonwealth Games after a superb performance at the Irish long course championships in Dublin's NAC.

Sloan (20) clocked a nomination time of 26.13 for the 50m backstroke in the heats before going on to win gold in 26.35.

The Bangor man joins Sycerika McMahon, Curtis Coulter and Michael Dawson on the team, though at their meeting tonight the Swim Ulster board must surely make a case to the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council for also taking some of those with consideration times –14-year-old 400m freestyle silver medallist Rachel Bethel, paralymic gold medallist Bethany Firth, 15-year-old Gemma Kane, 14-year-old Danielle Hill, 18-year-old Conor Munn and 20-year-old David Thompson.

But Lisburn's Bethany Carson looks set to miss out.
