County Down Olympian Joseph Murphy jetted his horse Calmaro to compete in the Landrover three-day event in Kentucky, and finished in the top 10 at the leading North American horse trials.

Not only did Murphy finish ninth at the global five-star event, he has now arrived to contest the Badminton International Horse Trials, televised live this weekend on BBC, with his second horse Cesar.

Murphy bought Calmaro two years ago and a foot-perfect clear round in the final showjumping phase moved him into ninth.

“It was pretty amazing to come all the way to Kentucky and have a clear in showjumping and cross country to finish in ninth,” said a delighted Murphy, who finished 14th in the London Olympics. “Calmaro is a horse that can gallop, jump and think quick on his feet.”

The Irish riders for Badminton are Murphy (Killyleagh), Clare Abbott (Lisburn), Susie Berry (Blackskull), Cathal Daniels (Kildare), Austin O’Connor (Cork), Sarah Ennis (Kilkenny), Padraig McCarthy (England).
