Junior competitions to make big splash

The follow-up to last year's hugely popular mini (U9) and maxi (U11) water polo events starts at Olympia Leisure Centre tomorrow (7pm) with six teams in each competition.

Backed by Belfast City Council and Ulster Water Polo and organised by the Cathal Brugha club, the first series runs for four weeks on alternate Fridays between Olympia and Andersonstown Leisure Centres. There will be a finals gala evening with cup and medal presentation at Andersonstown on December 13.

The competing teams include Brugha, Clonard and Donegall Diamonds along with teams from clubs more closely associated with competitive swimming. Lisburn, Newry and Bangor Barracudas are again taking part.

Brugha chairman Phil Kelly, the driving force behind this project, was both surprised and delighted with the response.

"We have been over subscribed in both competitions and have had inquiries from far and wide. Hopefully we can facilitate everybody next time," he said.
