Methodist College A-level student Katie Riley (18) and her horse Versace Biscuit were the toast of Irish eventing when she was crowned the 2018 Kubota Tattersalls International champion junior at the highly acclaimed horse trials venue in Ratoath, Meath.

Tattersalls, which hosts the National Hunt Derby Sale later this month, saw over 20 Olympic eventers and Irish champions compete over three days, with a host of celebrities such as Jennifer Saunders of French and Saunders, Gordon Elliott, Robbie Power, Barry Geraghty and Eddie O'Leary in attendance.

Fifteen-year-old Newtownhamilton High School student Lucy McIlroy finished runner-up to Katie Riley on her horse Major Black. Lucy's parents, Mark and Angela, bought the horse as a three-year-old and both competed him cross country before handing the reins to Lucy.

Riley, the daughter of Belfast City Hospital consultant Marshall Riley and his wife Sarah, plans to pursue a career as an equine vet and has had an offer from Cambridge.
