Raphoe's Chloe and Sam Magee had a fine opening mixed doubles win today in the All England Badminton Championships in Birmingham beating the No.5 seeds Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jamie of Malaysia 21-19 21-16.

Brother and sister Sam and Chloe are involved in a tough challenge to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Chloe said: "We need to improve on our current world ranking of 34th, so it is a good result to beat the No.11 ranked Malaysian pair."

Next up for a place in the quarter-finals will be another higher ranked pair Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo of Japan.

In the men's singles, young Dubliner Nhat Nguyen, ranked 57th in the world, had an outstanding win yesterday, beating the No.8 seed Kidambi Srikanth of India, ranked 11th in the world, 21-11 15-21 21-12.

Nguyen will play the World No.9 Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands for a place in the quarter finals.
