Martin Rogan’s back in Prizefighter

Former Commonwealth heavyweight champion Martin Rogan will return to the ring as part of the first International Prizefighter event on May 7 at the Alexandra Palace.

Martin Rogan, the first winner of Prizefighter three years ago, will be taking on, among others, former World title challenger Kevin Johnson, who sparred with the Belfast man ahead of his ill-fated first defence of the Commonwealth belt against Sam Sexton.

Unbeaten Irish-based Cuban Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez is also in the line-up.

Belfast man Rogan clearly believes that another victory in Prizefighter could be the most viable route back to title contention.

While he enjoyed two comeback wins just before Christmas, the British and Commonwealth titles have been tied up due to Dereck Chisora’s on-off World title clash with Wladimir Klitschko.

“This event has been bubbling up for over a year now and I am so excited we have finally made it happen,” said Matchroom Sport’s managing director Eddie Hearn.

“As Prizefighter starts its international expansion, this flagship event couldn't have come at a better time and British boxing fans are in for a real treat on May 7. As always the line-up will combine an eclectic mix of prospects, champions and characters.

“In Martin Rogan we have a man that epitomises Prizefighter, our first ever champion and a guy looking to force his way back into the big-time.

“Johnson will be the first American fighter signed for Prizefighter and has lost only once, in a points decision to Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title.”

Tickets are available from Matchroom Sport priced at £35 unreserved, £50 and £60 ringside and £120 VIP: 01277 359900.
