Over 60 of the top young sailors from all over Ireland and the UK will take to the water today from Royal North of Ireland yacht club at Holywood for the Topper Irish National Championships, staged over the course of three days until Sunday.

Over the past few days, competitors have been honing their skills on Belfast Lough under the watchful eyes of their squad coaches.

With a series of nine races planned over the three days, it promises to be an exciting and highly competitive event for the young sailors.

RYA High Performance manager and former Olympic sailor Matt McGovern commented: "This is shaping up to be a fantastic event with not only the best sailors in Ireland attending, but also the best young talent from across the UK.

"As a region Northern Ireland has some great new talent coming through in this year's Youth Performance Programme.

"Several sailors have been regularly finishing in the top 10 across many of this season's National events.

"In the most recent Irish Championships, Ethan McCormac from Cushendall Sailing and Boat Club finished third overall, closely chased by Ballyholme Yacht Club's Hannah Dadley Young in fifth, which also saw her take the title of first female.

"With performances like these, and many others, it is an exciting time for Northern Irish sailing."
