McHugh single-minded in pursuit of his eighth title

Bowls

Whitehead's Martin McHugh is back on the title prowl in the Northern Ireland Bowling Association Championships - and that's bad news for rest of the field!

The Ireland international will tonight hope to harden his challenge when he faces Bangor's Alan Stewart in the semi-final of the singles at Carrickfergus.

McHugh has previously paraded the trophy an astonishing seven times, the last back in 2015.

Level-headed McHugh admits to being proud of his achievements, but they are in the past.

"You have to take each game on its merit, so my focus is on this semi-final," said McHugh. "I've had a great run in the singles in recent years, but you can take nothing for granted in this game."

Divis' Gerard McGleave, the 2012 champion, will meet Balmoral's Mitchell Albert in the other semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

Dunbarton's DJ Wilson will tonight put his Private Greens League singles title on the line when he faces Alan McLean in the semi-final at Ewarts.

There is the prospect of an all-Dunbarton final as David Copeland lines out against Ballymena's Stephen Coleraine in the other last four tie.

Meanwhile, Whitehead are the first name in the hat in the IBA Senior Cup.

The East Antrim team recorded an impressive 14-shot win over CYM in Dublin at the weekend and now face either Pickie or Balmoral on August 11.

Following a horrendous day of rain and gales, the game was the only survivor. Pickie and Balmoral will now meet on August 2. On the same night Larne and Belmont lock horns at Old Glenarm Road.

The final tie, Coleraine versus Dun Laoghaire, is on Sunday, August 5.

Barry Browne was the top performer for Whitehead in Dublin, skipping his rink to a 23-15 win against Derek McCarthy.

Stephen McKinley and Ireland international Marty McHugh also made a significant contribution, beating Ian Gillen (21-15) and Ian Wilson (19-14).

CYM's only moment of relief came from Frank McCarthy, who recorded a 24-18 win against James Caldwell.
