McKeown hails side after latest success

By Alex Mills

Private Greens League captain Adam McKeown hailed his team's performance following their success in the IBA Inter-Association Championship at the North West over the weekend.

The PGL kids made it a winning double as they followed on from the victory in the senior championship only a few weeks back.

They began their assault with a confidence-boosting victory over the Northern Ireland Bowling Association on Friday night at Ballymoney before racing to a 15 shots victory against the Provincials, last season's winners, at Limavady.

And, the impressive PGL unit finished with job with a certain degree of style against the Bowling League of Ireland, again at Limavady, but by that stage their name was already being prepared to be inscribed on the trophy.

"It was a fantastic effort from the boys," said McKeown. "It was a strong performance from day one. There is not doubt, the wins against the NIBA and the Provincials put us into a great position.

"Although we were big favourites to defeat the BLI, we still had to complete the job - and we did that with a bit to spare."

There were quite a few star performers on show, particularly McKeown and Jamie Watson, who finished the event unbeaten.

When the Ireland selectors meet next week to finalise the team for this season's Under-25 Home International Series they will have much to ponder.

"It was an excellent weekend with plenty of young talent on show," said Irish boss Neil Booth. "We are working hard at bring players through the system from the Under-18s to the Under-25s, and then the natural progression is move them into the senior side.

"The Private Greens League deservedly lifted the Under-25 title after putting in three really strong performances, but there were players from the other associations that didn't do themselves any harm at all.

"It will be a tough call for the selection panel, but it's a nice problem. It's great to have so many young players emerging as international candidates."
