Metro Jack holds off Hero's late bid for line

By Robert Fenton

Newry-based Boylesports Hero, handled by Brendan Matthews narrowly failed by a short head to land the €20,000 Dundalk International (550) at the Louth venue on Saturday night.

The prize went to the Peter Cronin-trained 10/1 outsider Metro Jack who made the most of trap one and battled on gamely to hold the challenge from Boylesports.

The short run to the first bend proved crucial with the three outside dogs missing the 'kick' leaving Metro and the Ronnie McKeown-trained Atitboy battling for the lead into the turn with Sidarian Blaze in behind.

The latter lost out when hampered by Atitboy who in the process, put himself out of contention.

Entering the back straight Metro Jack made his move. By now Boylesports Hero had recovered somewhat from a tardy start and made his back-straight pace tell, emerging as a serious threat at the third turn.

But Metro kicked on again turning for home though Hero fought back as the pair flashed over the line together.

But Metro just held on to win by the minimum margin in 30.11 secs.
