Northern Ireland returned empty-handed from netball's European Under-21 Championship in Worcester after double defeat by their celtic cousins over the weekend.

Predictably blitzed 83-20 by hosts, title holders and hot favourites England in Friday night's daunting opener, the emerging greens then lost to Scotland, 52-37, on Saturday.

Yesterday morning's showdown with Wales was Northern Ireland's last chance to avoid a whitewash and they kept pace early on before trailing 14-10 at the first break.

The Welsh went 12 clear at one stage during the second period as their defence made it difficult for the Northern Ireland shooters, but the half-time score was 27-18.

Rebecca McCullough's girls kept fighting hard but never really looked like closing the gap and Wales extended their lead to 13 goals at the last interval and went on to win 56-40, securing silver medals behind England in the process.
