Obama a star spangled winner in Drumbo final

By Robert Fenton

Toolmaker Obama justified his favourite's tag in taking Drumbo's A3 Grandstand Restaurant 550 final, worth £500 to Scottish owner William Hyslop.

Obama, a black dog, trained by Robert Gleeson, had that bit more class, having competed in the Irish Derby, so he was a strong fancy for the prize but went off at a generous even money.

He was very slow away but was lucky enough to get a clear run on the outside behind Have A Go and Drumskea Tamera.

Once he came off the second bend, Obama moved clear down the far side.

It was all over bar the shouting but Vista Balls stayed on to get to within a length of Obama at the line (30.17).

There were two sparkling shows over 525, especially from Sean and Francie Hagan's Coalisland black bitch Mucho Macho Emma. She recorded the fastest time of her career (28.55) in putting seven lengths between herself and Milldean Bobby.

Fane Zeema, jointly-owned by Belfast's Dave McErlean and Dundalk's Martin Sharkey, runs the track well and once hitting the front early from trap one, powered clear down the back-straight and finished six lengths in front of Abbeylea Rocket, clocking 28.60.
