Paul edges close to Gold standard in Open title win

Paul McCreery battled his way back to claim the coveted Ulster Open Table Tennis Men's Singles Trophy in Lisburn Badminton Centre and set down a Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games selection marker, while another Gold Coast athlete, Charlotte Carey (Wales) took home the Women's honours.

The Welsh visitor made her late night dash from the Spanish Open worthwhile by taking a hat-trick of Ulster titles, sharing Mixed Doubles honours with Gavin Maguire, Women's Doubles with the irrepressible Malone College pupil Sophie Earley, aged 12, and then ended the hopes of German visitor, Sejla Fazlic, in the Women's Premier event.

Master Graduate McCreery survived a match point against Dublin hero Tom Davis in a five set thriller, before clawing back a two set deficit to beat fellow Irish and Ormeau TTC colleague Gavin Maguire in another five-setter.

Vietnamese ace Hung Nguyen rolled back the years to win the Masters Title, having played in the Ulster 25 years ago!
