European Games: Londonderry triathlete Aileen Reid’s medal hopes were dashed after she finished sixth in this weekend’s inaugural European Games in Baku.
The 32-year-old had been hoping to give the 55-strong Irish team a great start by winning a medal in Saturday’s race.
But her time of two hours, three minutes and 30 seconds was three-and-a-half minutes slower than Olympic champion Nicola Spirig of Switzerland who took the top spot.
Sea conditions were tougher than expected for the 1,500m swim leg and although Reid dealt with it well, emerging from the water in 20:46 and remaining within reach of the leaders.
Rachel Klamer from the Netherlands finished in second place with Sweden’s Lisa Norden in third.
Heather Sellars of Great Britain finished in 15th place.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games competitor Russell White showed promise in the men’s event. The 23-year-old finished in 36th place in a time of 1:54:41. Great Britain’s Gordon Benson took victory in a time of 1:48:31.
