Rising star Cathcart storms to the Cadet Boys' title

By Staff Reporter

Young Ulster hotshot Owen Cathcart made waves in the table tennis world at the weekend when he won the Cadet Boys' Singles title at the Slovenia Junior and Cadet Open. The 15-year-old entered the tournament as the second seed and fully lived up to that reputation, winning his final two matches in straight sets to ease to the trophy.

Cathcart saw off Korea's Park Gyunhyeon 13-11 11-7 6-11 11-6 in the quarter-final and then, even more impressively, No.3 seed Ivor Ban of Croatia in the semi-final in his first straight sets win of the final day - 11-5 11-4 11-9.

That set up a mouth-watering final against the in-form Jeho Himnakulhpuingheta of India, who had knocked out Argentine Matias Guadalupe, the top seed, earlier in the tournament.

However, Cathcart would easily get the better of his 14-year-old opponent, winning 11-6 12-10 11-3 to take the title in Otocec.

In the Girls' Singles, Elena Zaharia of Romania emerged victorious, defeating Prithika Pavade of France in the final.
