Rowing: Campbell eases into semi-final

The weather on the first day of competition at the World Cup regatta in Munich was windy with heavy rain but that didn’t deter Coleraine’s Alan Campbell and Richard Chambers who comfortably made today’s semi-finals of their respective events.

Campbell won his heat, easily, in 6:36.39, ahead of Kenneth Jurkovski of the USA, and good enough for third overall behind local favourite Marcel Hacker and last year’s world champion Ondrej Synek from the Czech Republic.

Chambers and his team mates in the Great Britain lightweight four – Paul Mattick, Rob Williams and Chris Bartley drew the current world champions Denmark, in their heat but an impressive turn of pace in the final 1,000m give Britain the quickest time of the day at 5:47.22, just under half a second ahead of the Danes.

Richard’s younger brother, Peter Chambers, finished second in the lightweight pairs and will race in the repechage today.
